prince of south africa

listenin to: love actually soundtrack

and so we come to the matter at hand: the appointment of the new protea captain. i am not alone as i perplexley ponder over ashwell prince's recent appointment which took him from stop-start player in the side to being south africa's latest captain. unfortunately his first match leading his side brought with it a crashing defeat at the skillful hands of sri lanka's fantastic batting partnership. but this should not be a reflection of his worth and potential as a captain. prince captained south africa a to a series win and led the same team to a three-day victory over England. agreed.

however, something is still amiss. prince has been as regular a feature in the sa team as have been the likes of neil mackenzie and loots bosman. ironically someone like makhaya ntini may have been a more likely choice-but being a good bowler does not automatically lend itself to being a fantastic captain. at least he has had more experience at international level. with smith being "injured" and kallis injured as well, boucher would have been the obvious choice. and the ironies don't stop there. prince himself has been a firm advocator against the quota system... seems he may be a victim of the system he himself is against. although he was appointed only as captain of the test side (with boucher just taking over for the 1-day series against sri lanka) i would like to see him more regularly before i trust his leadership. i'm sure that isn't asking for much. and at the least, he needs to make the squad to travel to the wc.

today i like: home may come to me
today i dislike: i wanna visit home
