rhodes music radio

listenin to: 5fm

on friday i went to the rmr agm and 25th birthday dinner. it was a great evening! apart from the fact that a room full of really well dressed djs is a novelty, the actual fish we had as centre pieces were awesome. we have this saying in radio circles, "you have a face for radio". meaning, people who work on radio are just too ugly to be on tv. absurd. i mean look at all the female djs being hired by uber popular youth stations like 5fm- those female djs are in part hired to look good. sounds dodgey but it is true! it's all about the brand. you need to walk, talk and look the brand. so this face for radio thing is a dying idea. none the less, friday evening remembered the last 25 years of a really awesome station. rmr was the first campus radio station to be granted a broadcast license, we run 24 hours a day, talk and music, with a staff of volunteers. we are not paid for what we do and most of the times we absolutely love it.

i felt a bit old, i've been an rmr dj for almost 6 years now. but it was a nice old. there is definitely a new, hipper and more loud bunch of djs who are the face of the station now. but that is good. change at a station like ours is good. it felt sad to know i'll be leaving soon and doing my last few shows, it's become this part of what i know and what i really enjoy doing. but it's good. amongst other things, i've learnt the truth of what it means to eloquently speak on-air for 3 minutes and how long those 3 minutes actually are. rmr will be better and shinier and glowing way into the coming on-air hours. one of the best feelings in the world, is being live on-air and knowing it all sounds good and it's all clicking. hard to explain. when i came to rhodes i was convinced i wanted to be a writer (lol that didn't work out) but i dabbled in radio and i was smitten! it's second to little else. (like indian cricket :)

today i like: snow patrol... they are rocking my world
today i dislike: organising anything
