listenin to: hello afrika on 5fm
i've been disappointed by the oprah winfrey show lately. i can't quite pin it down-but it has slowly degenerated into an exhibition of commercial journalism. it almost leaves a worn out bubblegum taste in my mouth and who knows maybe it is not meant to be about something more serious all the time-but last night i watched the 2nd part of the elie wiesel interview. elie wiesel is a holocaust survivor and has dedicated his time and work to fighting indifference, intolerance and injustice in various parts of the world and through varoius means and causes. he lost his parents and sisters in the gas chambers and concentration camps of the holocaust. the impact of the horror, aftermath and his story are documents in la nuit or night. i must get my hands on a copy. it was silently awesome to listen to his words and hope.
i know so many people, myself included, who find themselves just too busy, too tired or too otherwise occupied to really give any time or parts of their lives to a meaningful cause. it doesn't have to be somthing big, sure money makes it easier, but give off your time, give off your skills, read to someone or just sit and listen to someone. stand for something! in his nobel peace prize acceptance speech he said"Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere."
i don't know, can one person make a difference? yes. and i don't think it always needs to be on a mandela level. small differences are good too. it creates a chain of difference like a ripple effect. "action is the only remedy to indifference, the most insidious danger of all"- elie wiesel
